Failed door lock motor, Bent or misaligned door latch, Lock switch failure, Wiring harness damage from self-clean heat
Weakened igniter (most common), Failed gas safety valve, Loose wire connection, Gas supply issue
Troubleshooting
View all →Common Failure Modes
Heating elements in electric ovens and igniters in gas ovens are standard wear items. Control boards can fail if exposed to excessive heat from self-cleaning cycles.
Maintenance
View all →Check gas connections and igniters
For gas ranges, inspect the flexible gas line connection for signs of wear or corrosion. Test igniters by turning on each burner and verifying they click and light within 3-4 seconds. A slow or absent igniter click may indicate a failing igniter module or dirty igniter electrode.
Clean burner grates and drip pans
Remove burner grates and drip pans and soak them in warm soapy water. Scrub away grease and food residue with a non-abrasive pad. For stubborn buildup, soak in a baking soda paste overnight. Clean burner ports with a pin or needle to ensure even flame distribution.
Deep clean oven interior
Run the self-clean cycle every 3-6 months, or manually scrub with baking soda paste and warm water. Remove racks first and soak them separately. Burnt-on residue reduces heating efficiency and can cause smoke.
Inspect and replace burner igniters
Check gas igniters annually for cracks or weak sparks. A failing igniter causes delayed ignition or clicking without flame. Electric ranges: inspect coil elements for hot spots or warping that indicates burnout.
