Troubleshooting

View all →

Common Failure Modes

HDDs consist of spinning platters and delicate read/write heads, making them highly susceptible to physical shock and mechanical wear. When an HDD fails, it is replaced, not repaired, unless expensive data recovery is required.

Maintenance

Defragment Mechanical Drives

Running a defragmentation tool reorganizes scattered files on the platters. This reduces read/write head movement, improving speed and longevity.

Ensure Proper Cooling

Excessive heat degrades magnetic platters and motors. Verify that the computer case fans are providing adequate airflow over the drive cage.

Monitor SMART Status

Check the Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART) data. It warns of mechanical wear and bad sectors before complete failure.
